Serendipity
Such is the tagline of one of my favorite romantic comedy films of all time, “Serendipity.” Serendipity is often described as the ‘good fortune of discovering something desirable by accident’. The word derives from an old Persian fairy tale entitled, “The Three Princes of Serendip.” However, in modern-day context, the word “Serendipity” is often associated with fate and destiny.

From a romantic point of view (perhaps based on the movie as well), Serendipity happens when two people suddenly find themselves brought together by life in the most unexpected situations. It happens when the universe conspires to make their paths cross not only once, but twice or even more.
In the movie, “Serendipity,” Sara (Kate Beckinsale) proposes the idea of allowing destiny to take control of her future with Jonathan (John Cusack). If they are meant to be together, she tells him, they will find their way back into one another’s life.
It’s funny how life can sometimes be like that. When you least expect something to happen, it happens as though the entire universe conspired to make it happen. That then would make you wonder whether that event was an act of fate, destiny, or pure coincidence. But then again, if something happens repetitively, can one really consider it as another act of coincidence?
Sara: You don’t have to understand. You just have to have faith.
Jonathan: Faith in what?
Sara: Destiny.
Contrary to Fate, we can never control our Destiny. If it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be. Each and every person we meet everyday come into our lives for a reason. We may not be aware of it, but somehow, these individual threads of life are woven into ours, creating a whole new tapestry of things that may occasionally surprise us—just like the concept of Serendipity.
Who knows? Maybe “the One” we’re looking for is just around the corner, waiting for the hand of destiny to give a little push.
The romantic sucker in me says that in life, Serendipity does happen. Maybe all we need to do is believe, have faith, and ride along the currents of Destiny.
Or go back, or give up, or pretend that you don’t buy it.
When it’s clear this time you’ve found the one, you’ll never let him go
Cos you know and you know that you know.
